Vietnam Visited: The Long, Unavoidable (yet festive) Bus Ride to Da Teh

For the wedding of our dear friends Malcolm and Lisa

Funnily enough, fucking around with the website got me into a groove, so I’ll keep writing for the sake of it. Apologies for not even getting a photo of the bride and groom. More (and better photographs in the shared facebook album) And here we go:

Following a night of drinks and food, and the morning of bun rieu, we all made our way to Orchids hotel to take our long and unavoidable bus ride to Da Teh, where Malcolm was going to get married. Noone knows this but Da Teh is also my rap name. It is at this point where I will start skipping the play-by-play, and get to the highlights.

We almost left Jimmy behind at the rest stop, finally got to Da Teh, and proceeded to a night of festivities for friends and family for the bride and groom. It was our first time experiencing a Vietnamese wedding in it’s full glory, and this wasn’t even the actual wedding. We were plied with home brewed alcohol, which was amazing. In fact, the more you drink, the more amazing it gets. It reminded me of the 办桌 culture in Taiwan, where these festivities proceed outdoors.

The wedding itself was fun experience, as we got to be the brothers in an overseas wedding (Other than waking up at 6am to get ready. As you can already tell, not a morning person). That being said, really appreciate Malcolm and Lisa for inviting us and giving us such a vital part to play. The actual wedding took place in a primary school, and had 70 tables worth of guests, which I approximated to be 700-800 guests. Basically a village-wide event. It was a real eye opener for us, but we had a great time meeting and drinking with everyone and getting shitfaced at 3pm.

Then the car to Da Lat came (Once again thanks Lisa for arranging the car and Matt for arranging with Lisa) and Matt, Jimmy and I bade the rest farewell as we continued on our journey to destroy the one ring revisit parts of Vietnam we saw 9 years ago.

All photos taken from my phone.

A pixel 6A because I would waste the potential of a better camera anyway
